San Antonio, Texas – Texas State softball captured its second straight Southland Conference Tournament Championship title this afternoon in a 3-0 win over Sam Houston State at Roadrunner Field. Senior pitcher Chandler Hall was voted the tournament's most valuable player. The honor is the third of her career and a Southland record for most tournament MVP honors by an individual. Texas State had a total of five all-tournament selections: Hall, Coralee Ramirez, Anna Hernandez, Brooke Baker and Shelby Carnline.
Today's victory is the third tournament win for the Bobcats in four years, and the first time Texas State has won both the regular season and tournament crown in the same year since 2009. The win gives Texas State the automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
Texas State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning to take control of the game. With Brooke Baker on second base and Haley Lemons on first, Chandler Hall singled down the left field line and head coach Ricci Woodard waved Baker home for the first run of the game.
The Bobcats added to their lead in the fourth inning when Hall got things going with a leadoff single up the middle. Pinch runner Brittney Garcia entered the game for Hall and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Courtney Harris. Garcia would eventually score on a Bearkat throwing error in an attempted putout of Coralee Ramirez at first.
Ramirez scored the Bobcats third and final run of the game on a squeeze play at home to give Texas State a 3-0 advantage.
Hall (22-6) pitched her second no-hitter of the season, as she fanned nine Bearkats to earn her 12th shutout of the season. Shelby Lancaster (12-8) had one strikeout and allowed seven hits in 4.0 innings in the circle.
The NCAA Softball Selection Show will be televised live on ESPNU at 9 p.m. CST. The Texas State Softball team will be holding a watch party on the club level of Bobcat Stadium. The watch party is open to the public. Eat 'Em Up Cats!
