Brooks Ybarra Nets 23 Points, But Bobcats Drop 96-75 Decision to Nicholls on the Road

Thibodaux, La. – Texas State (8-14, 1-8 SLC) started the second half out cold against Nicholls (7-15, 3-7 SLC) and couldn't recover, as the Bobcats fell to the Colonels, 96-75 this afternoon at Stopher Gym. The Colonels took advantage of a 20-9 run to begin the half, and the Bobcats just couldn't recover.

Senior guard Brooks Ybarra had a team-high 23 points (8-of-12), for his third 20+ point performance of the season as he was making shots from all over the court today. Senior guard Travis Jones made his presence known on offense and defense to finish with 19 and five rebounds and a few charges. Junior forward Matt Staff continued solid play as he chipped in 10 points. Texas State shot 45.5 percent from the field, but lacked production from its bench which scored 11 points.

The Bobcats had trouble stopping the Colonels down low as Nicholls scored 44 of its points in the paint. Texas State was able to force Nicholls outside the paint as the game went on, holding the Colonels to 14 points in the paint in the final 12 minutes of play.  

Texas State slightly outscored Nicholls in the final seven minutes, 26-25, including four three-pointers by Ybarra and Jordan Kirschke combined.  As the game went on, Texas State just wasn't able to stop the Colonels offense, as the home team came away with the 96-75 victory this afternoon.

Texas State entered halftime down 42-35, after Nicholls went on six-point run to close out the first half. The Bobcats gave up 22 points in the paint in the half, which hurt them on the scoreboard. Ybarra had 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting to lead the Bobcats in the period.

Nicholls was led by Trevon Lewis who came off the bench to record 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting to go with 11 boards. Dantrell Thomas scored 22 points and Shane Rillieux added 16 points.

Notes: Bobcat starters this afternoon were Vonn Jones, Wesley Davis, Travis Jones, Brooks Ybarra and Matt Staff … Ybarra notched his 18th double figure scoring game and 13th straight … T. Jones recorded his fifth double digit scoring performance … Staff had his 16th double digit scoring game today … Fewest bench points this season … eighth time this season an opponent has shot 50 percent or more from the field.
