San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State women's basketball had a historic night on Saturday, beating UTSA, 87-67 at Strahan Coliseum. With its first win over UTSA in its last eight tries, the Bobcats earned its first berth to the Southland Conference Tournament since 2008.
Verinus Kalu got the Bobcats going with two early fastbreak layups, capping a 7-0 run for Texas State to put them up 12-6 at the 15:00 mark in the first. A few minutes later, the Bobcats went on another 16-4 run to take a 30-14 lead.
UTSA fought its way back into the game, closing the gap to 35-30 at the 3:30 mark, by virtue of collecting fouls on the Bobcats. Texas State showed its resolve however, ending the half on a 10-3 run to take a 45-33 run into half. Kelsey Krupa ended the half in style converting on a left wing three, her first of the game.
Texas State was able to grab a convincing lead thanks to a hot shooting performance in the first 20 minutes that saw it shoot 46.9% (15-of-32).
The Bobcats put the game away with another 10-0 run in the second half taking the game from a nine point advantage to a 65-46 lead with 9:07 to go. During the run, Ford hit acrobatic shots to give her 20 points for the game.
Following the game, Krupa's boyfriend Matt came down to propose to her. She gladly accepted sending the crowd into the loudest ovation of the afternoon.
