Evanston, Ill. – In a game that saw 14 lead changes and six ties, it was Northwestern (8-3) that came out on top tonight at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Wildcats defeated Texas State, 74-68.
Texas State (4-7) was able to spread the ball well, as multiple players scored for the Bobcats. An offense that was highlighted by various dunks, it was Joel Wright that led the charge with 19 points and seven rebounds. Wesley Davis added a career-high 19 points and three steals.
With all the back-to-back scoring that transpired, the Bobcats were able to record an 8-0 run that gave them a 64-60 advantage at the 5:56 mark. Texas State found itself up by three points with three minutes remaining, but the Wildcats would not go away quietly. Northwestern hit seven free throws (7-of-10) in the final three minutes and 31 seconds of play; it was just enough offensive production to top the Bobcats tonight.
Tonight's game was a doozy for television. A 5-0 run by Texas State gave the Bobcats an 11-8 lead at the first media timeout. Texas State used a handful of scorers in the first four minutes to take an early advantage over the home team.
Texas State outscored Northwestern 17-7 in the final eight minutes of the first half to take a two-point lead into halftime. The Bobcats shot a solid 52 percent from the floor and went 10-of-12 at the charity stripe in the period to stay one step ahead of the Wildcats.
Matt Staff continued his solid streak at the free throw line, connecting on all four attempts to improve to 33-of-33 on the season – No. 1 in the nation. The Bobcats shot 86.7 percent from the charity stripe as a team.
Northwestern was led by Dave Sobolewski who had 18 points. Reggie Hearn added 15 points, while Tre Demps chipped in 12 points. Northwestern's hot spot of the night was behind the three-point line. The Wildcats hit an opponent-high 12 three-pointers.
The next stop for Texas State will be Central Michigan. The Bobcats will take on the Flying C on Thursday, Nov. 20. Tip-off at McGuirk Arena is slated for 7 p.m.
