El Paso, Texas – In a nip and tuck game, the home team UTEP Miners were able to come away with an 88-81 win over Texas State, Saturday night at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso. Diamond Ford led the Bobcats with 25 points, tying her season-high.
Tied 77-77, UTEP was able to get an offensive rebound and put it in for a two-point lead. Following a Ford miss, the Miners hit Kelli Wllingham on the wing for the Miners' first-and-only three-pointer of the night to make it a 84-79 game.
The game began as an offensive flurry with Texas State having five of its first six field goals coming from beyond the arc as the Bobcats led 21-16 in the first six minutes.
With seven minutes to go in the first, Ashley Ezeh had one of the highlight plays of the game. As the shot clock was expiring, she hit a running hook in traffic to give the Bobcats a 32-30 lead.
UTEP took a brief 39-37 lead, but the Bobcats responded immediately, going on a 9-2 run to take a 46-41 lead into halftime. It marked the first time Texas State has led UTEP at halftime since 2005, a stretch spanning five games.
In the second half the game stayed between a four-point margin either way for nearly the entire final 18 minutes. Texas State initially went up 48-41, but UTEP trimmed the margin to 48-46 just a few minutes later.
Texas State will now return home for one game, on Thursday, Dec. 6, at 6:30 p.m., when the Bobcats take on Huston-Tillotson..
