Anchorage, Alaska – Texas State (2-3) wasn't able to move past Loyola Marymount (3-2), as it fell today to the Lions, 78-63, at the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. The Bobcats shared the ball well, but they couldn't overcome a Loyola Marymount team that dominated on the boards (48-32).
The Bobcats trailed the Lions at the half, 33-28, but a Wesley Davis bucket to start the second half cut the Lions lead to three points. A couple of plays later, Corey Stern made a free throw to trim the Lions lead to two points.
The Lions remained one step ahead and stretched their lead to as many as 18 points in the second half. Vonn Jones layed the ball in with 2:37 to go in the game to cut LMU's lead to 67-60, but that would be as close as the Bobcats would get. The Lions were able to grab the victory with a 78-63 win.
It was a struggle for the Bobcats to catch a rhythm from the floor, but they fought their way to the free throw line. Texas State connected on 16-of-22 free throw attempts.
V. Jones scored 14 points and dished out five assists to lead the Bobcats. Matt Staff registered 11 points, and Corey Stern had 10 points and seven rebounds. Reid Koenen also had a solid effort today with nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.
LMU was led by Anthony Ireland who had 20 points. Ayodeji Egbeyemi added 15 points, while Ashley Hamilton pulled down a game-high 12 boards.
Texas State will play its last game of the Great Alaska Shootout on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 3 p.m. CT at Sullivan Arena. The Bobcats will face former Texas State head coach Jim Woolridge and his UC Riverside team.
