Denton, Texas – In a back-and-forth game, much like the teams' season opener at Belmont, the Texas State women's basketball team defeated North Texas 88-83, Monday night at the Super Pit in Denton.
Jasmine Baugus set the tone early with two steals on consecutive North Texas possessions, and took them coast-to-coast for layups, allowing the Bobcats to take an early 11-5 lead. Diamond Ford continued the defensive tone with another steal for a fastbreak layup and the Bobcats stretched their lead to as many as 21-7. The two finished the game as the leading scorers, with Baugus scoring a career-high 17 points while Ford added 23.
North Texas used its full court pressure to get back into the game and force Texas State into turnovers of its own, cutting the Bobcat lead to 25-20. Texas State, however, kept up the high pressure and Erin Peoples took a ball from a Mean Green player, then went end-to-end to get the Bobcats back up 30-20. Texas State turned five UNT turnovers into 10 points in the first 12 minutes of the game.
The teams went back and forth for the rest of the half and Ford was able to put an exclamation point on the first half as she hit a shot from beyond half court at the buzzer as the first half expired. It was the team's eighth three-point shot of the first half.
The second half was as big a roller coaster as the first. The Bobcats lead swelled to as big as 16, and as little as two. Erin Peoples had one of the biggest plays of the day with 5:40 to go, grabbing an offensive rebound and putting it back for an and-one, giving Texas State a 77-71 lead.
The lead was cut to one in the last minute, when Ashley Ezeh made a layup with 30 seconds to go. North Texas missed its three-point attempts down the stretch and the Bobcats made their free throws down the stretch to improve to 2-0.
Texas State looks to go to 3-0 with another rematch from last year, as the Bobcats will host Rice on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m.
