San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State soccer team won an overtime thriller in its regular season finale, 1-0 over I-35 rival UTSA, Sunday afternoon at the UTSA Recreational Field. With the win, the Bobcats secured the No. 3 seed in next week's WAC Tournament.
With just 1:28 left in double overtime, Kelsie Townsend got a loose ball on the left side of the 18-yard box. She shot it towards the goal and had it go over the head of the goalkeeper. Townsend's game winner was her first goal of the season.
Defensively the Bobcats stood tall all game, being able to withstand numerous attacks by the Roadrunners. UTSA had 21 shots on the day, including five on goal.
Natalie Gardini led the defensive effort for Texas State for her fourth shutout of the season. In the second half she was 1-on-1 with UTSA forward Maria Rojas who had a shot from eight yards away, but Gardini stayed in front of it and caught the laser to keep the game scoreless.
Offensively for Texas State, Lynsey Curry had a team-high five shots, including four on goal. In the first 30 seconds of the game her and Tori Hale each had shots on goal, but UTSA turned them away.
Next up for the Bobcats will be the WAC Tournament opener on Thursday in the No.3-6 game. The Bobcats time will be determined later in the week.
