Natchitoches, La. – Texas State battled against Northwestern State on the road today, but fell to the Demons 83-68 at Prather Coliseum. The Bobcats fall to 7-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play. The Demons improve to 8-7 overall and 1-0 in league play.
Junior guard Vonn Jones registered a career-high of 18 points tonight to lead all Bobcats. Senior Brooks Ybarra chipped in 12 points. Senior forward Matt Staff grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
Texas State scored first in the second half, and V. Jones was all over the ball as he was driving to the basket every chance he got. The Bobcats appeared to be just one step behind in the second period as Northwestern State was able to control the majority of the second half to outscore the Bobcats, 48-39.
The Bobcats were able to edge the Demons on the boards as they out-rebounded NSU on the defensive end, 24-18. Texas State seemed to find itself just one stop away from turning the game around, but the 23 turnovers hurt them immensely. Ball movement this afternoon helped NSU grab the win at home for the 83-68 victory.
William Mosely led NSU with 15 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. Shamir Davis and Demetrice Jacobs had 14 points apiece. Jacobs also tacked on seven assists.
Texas State's bench scored 44 points, while the Bobcats finished 23-of-51 (45.1%) from the field and 18-of-27 (66.7%) from the charity stripe. Northwestern State shot 47.7 percent from the field as it connected on 31 field goals. The Demons finished 14-of-26 from the free throw line.
The Bobcats were down by as much as 12 points in the first half, but after catching a rhythm Texas State was able to get in a groove. Texas State went on a 20-7 run with Ybarra leading the charge with seven of the 20 points. The Bobcats led by as many as two points in the half, but the Demons fought back to take a 35-29 lead into the locker room.
Texas State won't play again until next weekend when it hosts McNeese State on Saturday, January 14 at 4 p.m. at Strahan Coliseum.
