San Marcos, Texas – Felicia Leask scored a goal for the third straight game, to lead the Texas State soccer team to a win in its conference opener over Sam Houston State, Friday at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
Leask's goal came in the 65th minute when Gabbi Cottee tapped a pass to her and Leask's shot went between the keeper's legs and rolled into the net for Leask's fourth goal of the year, a career-high.
The first part of the game was controlled by Sam Houston State. Six and a half minutes into the game the Bearkats had a one-on-one opportunity with Lauren Frazier, when Bearkat forward Patricia Mallory got behind the Bobcat defense, but Frazier made a sprawling save, keeping the game scoreless.
In the 20th minute, Mallory had another golden opportunity, getting the ball in the middle of the 18-yard box in traffic, but her shot hit the post.
For the Bobcats, Sydney Curry sent a leading pass towards a streaking Felicia Leask in the 30th minute, but it was just too far out in front and the ball trailed over the endline for a goal kick.
Andrea Mauk had the Bobcats' best shot of the first half, tapping the ball away from a Bearkat defender, then streaking down the sideline. Unfortunately her shot was stopped by the Sam Houston goalkeeper who had to slide to her right to cradle it in.
Leask had another run in the beginning of the second half, beating a couple of Sam Houston defenders down the field, but her shot went wide of the goal.
Natalie Gardini got her first win of the year, coming on in relief of Lauren Frazier in the second half, as both keepers earned half a shutout. Gardini stopped four shots in her 45 minutes of play.
The Bobcats will return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m, against Stephen F. Austin at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. The Lady Jacks will come into the game, 1-0-0 in league play as well, after defeating UTSA 3-0 in San Antonio Friday night.
