Men’s Basketball Hammers Nicholls, 75-60

Tony Bishop tied a career-high 16 rebounds and netted 17 points to lead Texas State to a 75-60 win over Nicholls this afternoon at Strahan Coliseum. The Bobcats led by as many as 31 points today, as they routed the Colonels for the first time since 2009. The victory improved the Bobcats record to 10-12, 5-3 SLC. The Colonels drop to 11-9, 5-4 in Southland Conference play.

Eddie Rios scored 16 points and Travis Jones added 13 points and seven rebounds to help lift Texas State to its fifth conference home win and second victory in a row.

The Colonels gave the Bobcats a little bit of trouble in the second half as Dantrell Thomas scored 17 points in the period for Nicholls. They went on a 10-0 run but Texas State got back-to-back layups by Bishop and Jones to put a halt to their momentum. The closest Nicholls got to Texas State was when Anatoly Bose cut the Bobcats lead to 71-58 with 58 seconds remaining. Ryan White once again was clutch at the free throw line in the final seconds of the game as he drained all four of his free throw attempts to help lift Texas State to the 75-60 victory at home.

Texas State jumped out to an 8-0 run to start the game, with Nicholls going 0 of 5 from the floor to start the game. Fred Hunter scored the Colonels first basket of the game with a reverse layup six minutes into the game. The Bobcats continued to outscore the Colonels as they went on a 22-point run, including nine straight points by Rios. Rios hit back-to-back treys before getting fouled on this third three-point attempt. He hit all three free throws to extend Texas State's lead to 35-6.

Bishop had six points and 10 rebounds in the first half and Rios had 11 points. The Bobcats held the Colonels to 26 percent shooting and forced eight turnovers. Nicholls' 16 first half points was the lowest by any Bobcat opponent this season.

Dantrell Thomas led Nicholls in scoring with 21 points and eight rebounds. Anatoly Bose chipped in 14 points and Fred Hunter had 12 points.

Texas State out rebounded Nicholls 43 to 34 and shot a season-high 85.7 percent from the free throw line. Nicholls failed to record a single blocked shot; it was the second time this season the Bobcats have held their opponents to zero.

Texas State will travel to Conway, Ark. on Wednesday, Feb. 9 to play Central Arkansas. Tip-off against the Bears is slated for 7 p.m.
