Tony Bishop Named SLC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

Frisco, Texas – Bobcat senior forward Tony Bishop has been named the Southland Conference men's basketball player of the week, the league office announced Monday. It is the first player of the week honor for Texas State all season.

Bishop recorded a pair of double-doubles to lead the Bobcats to a pair of home wins last week that kept them in a first-place tie in the Southland Conference standings. The senior from Garland, Texas (Garland), scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in an 82-69 victory over Southeastern Louisiana and then posted 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in an 82-80 win over UTSA. He leads the team with nine double-doubles this season, which is just two off the conference lead. Bishop shot 68 percent from the field. His 22 points in the win over Southeastern La. were just one point off his career high. In just two seasons at Texas State Bishop now ranks sixth overall with 52 career blocked shots.

Honorable mention this week goes to Northwestern State center William Mosley, McNeese State guard Diego Kapelan and Sam Houston State forward Gilberto Clavell. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland men's basketball sports information directors.

Each school's SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
