San Antonio, Texas – A first half hole proved to be too much to climb out of, as the Texas State women's basketball team lost to UTSA, 81-64, Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
It was an uphill climb most of the first half for the Bobcats. Texas State rallied from a 16-7 deficit to cut it to five, before the Roadrunners went on a 10-0 run to make it 32-14. The Bobcats then traded baskets with UTSA for the rest of the half, and trailed 39-22 going into half.
Verinus Kalu changed the momentum early on for the Cats in the second half, grabbing two steals in the first minute, helping Texas State to go on a 6-0 run and close the gap to 11 at 39-28.
Kalu was a force the rest of the game, en route to grabbing a career-high seven steals. She propelled Texas State to go on numerous runs, getting the game to within nine at one point, but every time it looked the Bobcats were about to turn the corner, UTSA would hit a three-pointer to kill the momentum. For the game the Roadrunners hit six treys. Kalu finished with nine points.
Leading the way offensively for Texas State was Diamond Ford who finished with 14 points.
The Bobcats will now head home for the final two games of the regular season, beginning Wednesday evening when Lamar comes to Strahan Coliseum at 7:00 p.m.
