Natchitcohes, La. – After ending the second overtime, tied 1-1, the Texas State soccer team won the ensuing shootout 3-1, over Sam Houston State to advance to the Southland Conference Championship game, Friday night at the Demon Soccer Complex in Natchitoches, La.
In the shootout, Lauren Frazier turned away three of the four shots she faced, diving to her left and right before the fourth shot from Sam Houston hit the post to clinch the win. Making goals for the Bobcats during the shootout were Kendell Webber, Taylor Kelley and Taylor Person
With the game 0-0, Sam Houston State's Emily Jureka scored with 11 minutes to go, as the Bearkats got on the board first Friday. Tricia Mallory drew Lauren Frazier out of the goal before dishing it over to Jureka for the 1-0 lead.
Their lead wouldn't last long as Serena Hines beat a Bearkats defender on a long pass to put a shot in the upper left hand corner for her eighth goal of the season.
In the sixth minute, Felicia Leask made a great leading pass to Erica Michaud who went one on one with the Sam Houston goalkeeper, but the keeper made a fantastic save to keep it 0-0.
Right before halftime, Leask fired a shot from the corner of the 18-yard box that hit the crossbar. Jourdan Brown came up in the box to collect the rebound and shoot herself, but it flew into the arms of Michele McCullough and the game went to halftime scoreless.
In the first 45 minutes, Texas State held a 6-0 advantage in shots, and a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal. Six different Bobcats each took a shot in the first half, including just the fourth of the year for Brenna Smith.
10 minutes into the second half Felicia Leask got a loose ball off a Bobcat corner kick and had a shot hit the post. Kendell Webber then got the rebound but her shot went wide.
The game is officially scored as a tie, moving Texas State's record to 13-5-1 for the year.
