Edinburg, Texas – In what was a high intensity game from start to finish, the Texas State men's basketball team beat Toledo, 94-91, in game one of the Texas Pan American Tournament at the UTPA Fieldhouse this afternoon.
Today's game went down to the final seconds with both teams giving it their all, but it was Texas State that escaped with the victory.
The first half was intense from start to finish. Neither team took more than a five-point lead, as they traded points for most of the half with both sides showing solid defense. The game was tied seven times in the period, but it was Toledo that went into the locker room with a one-point lead, as Rios missed a long trey with time expiring.
Wesley Davis came alive in the second period as he was all over the court. An up-and-under by Davis increased the Bobcat lead to 51-48 with 15:58 and his energy could be felt all over the coliseum. Texas State continued its up-tempo play as it was able to take a six-point lead on a Ybarra three-point play.
Toledo battled back the best way they knew how, which was at the free throw line. The Rockets connected on eight free throws and made a few layups to take a 66-63 lead. Back-to-back treys by V. Jones and Koenen gave Texas State a 69-66 edge.
A pair of lay-ins by Staff gave Texas State an 85-83 lead over Toledo, which forced the Rockets to call a timeout with 2:43 left to go in the game. Reese Holliday made a layup for Toldeo coming out of the timeout to tie the game, but V. Jones hit a jumper for the Bobcats, followed by a pair of made free throws by Basil Brown to go up 89-85 with 1:41 to go.
Julius Brown hit a long range three-pointer for Toledo to bring the game to 90-88 in Texas State's favor with 36.9 seconds on the clock. The Rockets fouled T. Jones on the inbound pass to send him to the line. Jones hit the first of two, then gathered his own miss and dished it out to V. Jones who was fouled. Jones drained both baskets for a 93-88 lead. Toledo retaliated with a desperation trey that connected to cut the Bobcat score to 93-91.Ybarra went 1-for-2 from the charity stripe to score the final point of the game and Texas State improved to 3-0 for the first time since the 1986-87 season.
Texas State will continue play in the Texas Pan American Tournament on Saturday at 7 p.m. on against host UTPA. The Bobcats close out tourney play on Sunday with a 4:30 p.m. game against USC-Upstate.
