San Marcos, Texas – Travis Jones went 5 of 5 from three-point land to help lead Texas State to a win over Northwestern State in its Southland Conference opener. The Bobcats beat the visiting Demons 84-71 to start conference play 1-0 and win their third straight.
Cameron Johnson led all scorers with 19 points and seven rebounds to record his third consecutive double digit performance. Jones finished with 17 points, four rebounds and two steals. Eddie Rios had 12 points, while Uriel Segura and #J.B. Conley# notched 10 points apiece.
Hot shooting by Texas State is what helped the Bobcats to the win this afternoon. The Bobcats outshot the Demons 54 to 35 percent in the game. Northwestern State cut the lead to eight points, outscoring the Bobcats, 9-4, in the first five minutes of the second half thanks to six points by William Pratt. Texas State responded with back-to-back treys by Jones and a layup from Conley to take the Bobcats back up by 16 points.
The largest lead of the game was at the 2:02 mark when Jones recorded a layup to give the Bobcats their final points of the game. The Demons would end the contest on a nine-point run to suffer its fifth-straight loss of the season.
Texas State shot 67 percent from three-point range to take a 42-30 lead into halftime. Jones and Segura combined for three straight treys midway through the first half to push Texas State's lead to 26-14. Segura led all players with 10 points at the break. Northwestern State went 0 of 12 from long range and shot 28 percent in the first half.
Devon Baker led Northwestern State with 17 points, but the biggest numbers came from William Mosley who tallied seven points, 14 rebounds and seven blocks.
Texas State will return to the court next weekend when it heads to Lake Charles, La. to play the Cowboys on January 15. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at Burton Coliseum. The Bobcats are 17-29 all-time against the Cowboys. Texas State beat McNeese State last year 95-88 at Strahan Coliseum.
