San Marcos, Texas – Despite leading 62-52 with 3:41 to go in regulation, the Texas State women's basketball team was unable to hold on, falling 69-63 in the I-35 rivalry, Saturday afternoon at Strahan Coliseum.
UTSA ended the game on a 17-1 run after being down 62-52, Alysse Davis hit the most crucial shot of the run, making a three from the top of the key with 1:10 to go, to give UTSA its first lead since 26-25 in the first half. During the run, the Roadrunners utilized a full-court press, the Bobcats had not yet seen in the course of the game. The press was able to force six turnovers in the final 2:55 of the game. For the game, Texas State had 21 turnovers, two below its season average.
Demi Clinch was the leader for the Bobcats, having herself a career game. She had 20 points on 4-of-4 shooting from three-point range and added five rebounds.
Throughout most of the game the Bobcats were able to answer runs put on by UTSA. Verinus Kalu was able to get a bounce pass through three defenders into the hands of Chika Ofoegbu who put it in for a 61-52 lead at the 4:00 mark. Dawn Kiel then made a free throw to go up 62-52.
Clinch led the Bobcat offense through the first 10 minutes. She connected on three treys, and added a block. The game was tied at the 6:14 mark at 21-21.
In the last six minutes of the first half, the Bobcats were able to go on an 11-5 run. Clinch and Diamond Ford were instrumental during the surge, scoring seven of the team's points. At halftime the Bobcats led 32-28, with Clinch the leading scorer at 15 points.
Texas State came out on a roll out of halftime, pushing its lead all the way to 43-31 at the 16:00 mark. Dawn Kiel came down the floor and hit Kelsey Krupa in the left corner for a trey, thoroughly putting the momentum in favor of the Bobcats.
UTSA went on a 7-0 to answer and cut the lead to 43-38 before Clinch hit her fourth trey of the game from the top of the arc to push the lead back to 46-38. The two teams then traded baskets for the next four minutes, with UTSA able to crawl back to 50-46 at the 7:44 mark.
The Bobcats will return to action on Wednesday when it heads south to Corpus Christi for a matchup against the Islanders. Both teams will be looking for their first win in the Southland Conference. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
