Balanced Attack Leads Texas State Past New Mexico State

Bobcats tally a season-high 10 aces in the win

Box Score

Tucson, Ariz. –
A balanced attack has been the norm for the Texas State volleyball team this season, and that was certainly the case on Friday evening as five Bobcats finished with between five and seven kills in a 3-0 sweep of New Mexico State.

It took extra points to decide the first two sets as the Bobcats won both by a 26-24 count. Texas State had slightly more breathing room in the third set as they won by a score of 25-20 to improve to 7-6 on the season. With the loss, New Mexico State dropped to 6-6 this season.

New Mexico State held advantages in kills, hitting percentage and assists, but the Aggies also committed 18 attack errors, 12 service errors and five blocking errors – all of which resulted in Bobcat points.

Texas State had its best serving effort of the 2010 campaign as the Bobcats recorded 10 aces and just five serving errors. Preslie Alexander led the barrage of aces with three, while Melinda Cave and Mo Middleton each had two. Shelbi Irvin, Caleigh McCorquodale and Danielle Sanchou all each had one ace for the Bobcats.

For the second straight match, the Bobcats held a significant advantage in blocks. Texas State totaled 7.0 blocks compared to just 3.0 for the Aggies. Alexander and junior Amber Calhoun both had three blocks, and Ashlee Hilbun chipped in with two.

Middleton led the team with six digs and Sanchou added five of the team's 21 total digs.

Irvin and McCorquodale did a good job of spreading the ball around and keeping the New Mexico State block off balance. Irvin led the team with 16 assists, while McCorquodale had nine for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats will look to finish with a 2-1 record at the Arizona Invitational when they take on Pepperdine at 12:30 p.m. Central Time on Saturday. Live coverage will be provided by txstatebobcats.com.
