Box Score

San Marcos, Texas –
The Texas State women's soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the Southland Conference Tournament after beating Sam Houston State 2-1 at the Bobcat Soccer Complex, Thursday night. The team will advance to play Southeastern Louisiana Friday night at 7 p.m.

The Bobcats got on the board just before half time when Felicia Leask took the ball in from the corner and dribbled in before dishing it to Britney Curry around the 6-yard box for the 1-0 lead.

Texas State thought it had gone up 2-0 in the 70th minute when Katie Herrick's shot appeared to carry the goalkeeper into her own goal when Pence caught the ball. However the referees determined Pence was still outside the goal, and kept the score at 1-0.

Jessica Elting made it 2-0 in the 79th minute when she got a loose ball outside the 18 yard box and knocked in the right corner for her second goal of the year.

Sam Houston State made it a tight game in the 87th minute when Tricia Mallory scored from 25 yards out from the right side of the field to make it 2-1.

Earlier in the game around the 10th minute Texas State had a good shot on goal when Britney Curry got the ball at the 6 yard box, and turned and fired, only to have the shot stopped by Bearkat keeper Jenny Pence.

In the 33rd minute Sam Houston State looked to go up 1-0, when Tricia Mallory had a breakaway against Bobcat keeper Lauren Frazier, but Frazier was able to make a sprawling save and keep the game scoreless.

For the game, Texas State was dominant in the attack, outshooting the Bearkats 14-10, including an advantage of 13-3 on corner kicks. Of those 13, 10 were in the second half.

With the win Texas State improves its record in SLC Tournament play to 14-5 all-time including 9-2 in its opening game of the tournament. It is also the second straight year the Bobcats have beaten Sam Houston State twice, after beating them 4-1 last Sunday in Huntsville.

Friday's game against the Lions will be the third straight year the teams have faced off in the SLC tournament. The two teams have split the last two years with the Lions winning last year in the SLC Championship game 2-0. Texas State will be bidding for its third straight appearance in the conference championship game.
