Greg Watson enters his first season as the throws coach at Texas State after spending the previous three seasons as a volunteer coach at the University of Nevada - Las Vegas.
In 2011, Watson trained Amanda Bingson in the hammer throw to help her break her own school record again with a mark of 229-0. Bingson won the Mountain West Conference in the hammer and earned the Most Outstanding Performance award for the second year in a row.
Bingson went on to win the West Preliminary Rounds and placed fourth at the NCAA Championships to earn First Team All-American honors. She finished the 2011 season ranked second in the NCAA and fourth in the U.S.
That same year, Watson helped Rebel Chelsea Cassulo break the school record in the 20-lb weight throw. Cassulo placed second in the hammer throw at the MWC Championships behind Bingson before going on to place third at the West Preliminary Rounds and fifth at the NCAA Championships to earn First Team All-American honors. Cassulo went on to compete at the U.S. Championships to fininsh ninth and record a personal record throw of 210-10. Cassulo finished the season ranked eighth in the NCAA and 16th in the U.S. CassuCas
In his first year with the Rebels, Watson’s athletes broke two of the school’s hammer throw records and sent one to the NCAA preliminary rounds.
In 2010, Bingson won Outstanding Performance of the meet at the Mountain West Championships in the hammer throw before placing eighth at the U.S. National Championships.
After three years at UNLV, Watson had athletes break three school records and record 12 top five all-time marks.
Before his time at UNLV, Watson competed in the throws at Southern Utah, where he holds the school record in the hammer throw. While at SUU, Watson was a four-time NCAA regional qualifier, advancing to the NCAA Championships his senior year. During his collegiate career, Watson captured three Summit League titles in the weight and hammer throw and two in the discus.
In 2008, Watson studied and trained under the guidance of 1972 Olympic Champion Anatoly Bondarchuk. During his prep career, he was mentored by four-time Olympian John Powell.
Watson earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with a minor in hospitality management from Southern Utah.
