John Maley brings a wealth of coaching experience to Texas State as he begins his first year as a member of the Bobcat coaching staff. Maley has 14 years of collegiate experience, including 11 seasons as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at St. Mary's University in San Antonio (1992 to 2003). Last year he was the head coach at Laredo Community College. During his stint at St. Mary's, the Rattlers posted a 430-179 record, won seven Heart of Texas and Heartland Conference championships, four regional titles and made four Division II World Series appearances. The highlight of Maley's career came in 2001 when the Rattlers won the NCAA Division II National Championship and posted a 50-13 record. At St. Mary's, Maley was responsible for pitching staffs that recorded ERA's of 3.43 in 1993, 2.47 in 1996, 2.99 in 2001 and 3.23 in 2002 to lead the league and finish in the top 10 nationally. His pitchers held opposing teams to batting averages of .220 in 1992, .217 in 1993, .196 in 1995, .215 in 1996, .197 in 2001 and .215 in 2002. During his coaching career at St. Mary's, Rattler pitchers recorded nine no-hitters, 22 one-hitters and 214 complete games while breaking virtually every league pitching record. Perhaps the greatest accomplishment of his career, however, is the fact that no Maley-trained pitcher has ever suffered a pitching-arm injury. Maley began his college coaching career at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Ark., where he was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for two seasons. Prior to coaching at the college level, Maley coached three seasons at the high school level. Pettus High School in Pettus, Texas. Yorktown High School.
