Recruitment and Tryout Information
 
Texas State Spirit Program has a signing process to predominantly fill our Coed, All Girl Cheer Team rosters, and Mascot Team. Texas State Spirit Program will still host a traditional tryout for Coed, All Girl, and Mascot to fill any open spots for the upcoming season.
 
More about signing with Texas State Cheer:
  • Connect with us: Seniors and current college athletes, complete our TXST Cheerleader Interest Form, email coaching staff, respond to our @TXSTcheer social media platforms, or share your skills and interest to cheer in college.
  • Candidates must have highly preferred team skill requirements.
  • Submit skills for evaluation by coaching staff via email: rriley@txstate.edu
  • Meeting with coaching staff (Virtual/In-person).
  • Proof of enrollment/acceptance to Texas State University prior to any official offers.
2024 – 2025 Texas State Cheer Tryouts:
  • NEW for 24-25 Tryouts will be 100% OPEN. Registration will take place March 1st – April 25th. There is a Tryout fee of $50.00 per athlete.
  • Tryouts will take place May 2nd and 3rd, with the first team practice on May 4th.
  • All tryout candidates must have proof of enrollment/acceptance to Texas State University by our in-person tryout.
  • Can’t make our tryout dates? Video submissions will be accepted. Videos are due by April 25th. More Information on video tryouts can be found below.
As a member of the 24-25 Texas State Spirit Program, our first on campus practice weekend is tentatively scheduled for June 6th & 7th.

MASCOTS:
  • Mascot Tryouts will take place on May 4th at 5:30pm.
  • Registration will take place March 1st- April 25th.
  • Tryouts will include Prop Use Evaluation, Physical Fitness Test, and Interviews.
 

Tryouts – What to Expect

 
The Texas State Cheer Coed and All Girl Open tryouts are May 2nd, and 3rd with the first team practice on the 4th.
 
Tryout Candidate Materials:
  • Proof of enrollment/acceptance to Texas State University
  • Two reference letters (Coach/Personal Reference and Employer/Teacher)
  • Copy of your College/High School Transcript (can be unofficial)
  • Copy of your insurance card
Friday May 2: 6pm - End
  • Tumbling Evaluation.
  • Teaching and Reviewing Sideline Materials (Fight Song & Cheer)
  • Allow time to put stunt groups together.
  • Cuts will be made following Tumbling Evaluation.
Saturday, May 3: 9am - 1pm & 3pm - 7pm
  • Interviews: Questions will include but not limited to knowledge of the university, the cheer program, and Bobcat athletics.
  • Sideline Materials Evaluations
  • Tryout Stunts (1 Sideline Stunt Ex: Full up or Toss Extension, 1 Elite Sequence Ex: BHS Up to Stretch Double Down)
  • Final Team Announcements
Sunday, May 4: All Girl 9am-12pm & Coed 1pm-4pm

Video Tryout Submission
Please submit all tryout videos to spiritprogram@txstate.edu

Can’t make in person tryouts? You may submit a video for consideration in our 25-26 program. Videos are due no later than April 25th. Video Submissions must still register and pay for tryouts.

Here is what your videos must be comprised of:
  • Interview:
    • Introduce yourself: Name, major, cheer experience, and position.
    • Question 1: Why Texas State?
    • Question 2: Why do you want to cheer in college?
  • Stunts:
    • Gameday stunt:
      • All Girl: Full up and a full up variation (low to high/high to high).
      • Coed: Toss Extension & Toss Target pull lib.
    • Elite Stunts:
      • All Girl: Any Flipping or Inversion Style elite stunt with a college level dismount. Ex: BHS Up or BHS Full Up – Stretch - Double Down.
      • Coed: Any Flipping or Inversion Style elite stunt with a college level dismount. Ex: BHS Up or BHS Full Up – Stretch - Double Down.
  • Tumbling
    • 5 Standing Tucks in a Row shrug every 7.
    • Best standing tumbling pass.
    • Best running Tumbling pass.
  • Fight Song and Cheer:

 
 
If Selected
You must be in good academic standing, which means that your cumulative GPA must be a 2.0 or higher. You cannot be on academic or disciplinary probation.
 
All persons must live in San Marcos (Hays/Comal County) area during the regular school year.
 
If selected, you understand that you are required to be covered by personal injury medical insurance throughout the period that you are a spirit program member at Texas State University.
 
If selected, you must attend all scheduled practices, classes, performances, summer camps, and other designated functions/duties assigned by the Spirit Program, coach or director.
 
If selected, you agree to follow all safety guidelines deemed necessary by the Spirit Program, coach or director.
 
If selected, you understand you are a game day and competitive cheerleader/mascot member. All team members are active members for any activities, games, and competition in which the program participates which can include weekends, student breaks, and limited holidays.
 
If selected, you will be required to fund raise individually and conduct clinics/camps to raise funds for the program.
 
Outside credentialed judges help facilitate tryouts. The coach and/or advisor have the authority to make the final decisions in the tryout process. The general tryout process is subject to change.
