SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State (1-0-1) dominated the possession game in its home opener versus UTRGV (0-2-0) and secured the 4-1 victory, fueled by seven assists and a brace from senior
Victoria Meza on Sunday night at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
The Bobcats applied the pressure early, maintaining offensive possession that broke through when
Matsuri Tsutsui's shot on goal was saved by the Vaquero keeper but
Constance Agyemang was there for the rebound and netted the putback in the 33rd minute.
It didn't take long for the Cats to score again when a three-on-three counterattack saw
Sydney Ritter kick it out to
Sydney Bassa, who led
Grace El-Deir on a cross and found the top-right of the net for the freshman's first goal of her NCAA career in the 39th minute. The score would remain 2-0 Texas State into the half.
The second half was more of the same Bobcat-led possession, as the team tacked on a third goal just four minutes after halftime.
Kaylie Smith played the ball back to
Ava Kooker, who delivered a gorgeous cross to
Victoria Meza, who headed it home.
Meza wasn't done yet, when Bobcat assists numbers six and seven of the home opener came from
Sanai Stewart and
Marivic Lek-Miro to allow the recent El Salvador Women's National Team captain to record a brace. It's the first brace since
Alexis Montgomery's a season ago versus Southern Miss (10/18/25).
The seven assists were the most by the Bobcats in a match since Texas State set a program record with 11 assists against Our Lady of the Lake on Aug. 14, 2025.
The Vaqueros would get on the board in the 73rd minute, but the Bobcats dominated the possession game all 90 minutes, proven by 22 shots to UTRGV's three. The score would be final, 4-1 Texas State, to improve its home opener win streak to six consecutive years.
