SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State softball opened its final home series of the season with a 5-4 win against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.
The Bobcats found some unconventional ways to score runs, but highlighting the game was a two-run shot from
Sami Hood to make it a one-run game in the 4
th. Maddy Azua also tossed the complete game with nine strikeouts.
How it Happened:
Coastal Carolina started the night off scoring two runs in the first inning on a trio of hits and an error. Azua got her first strikeout of the night, though, to end the inning despite the Chanticleers having a runner on third.
Aiyana Coleman RBI singled to score
Keely Williams in the bottom half of the inning to open the scoring for Texas State.
Both sides were getting runners on base consistently throughout the early innings. Texas State was able to pull the second a run back in the second after an error by the Chanticleers' second basemen to equalize.
Unfortunately, Coastal Carolina responded with runs of their own in the fourth. They scored one off a sac-fly and one off a bases-loaded walk to take a 4-2 lead against Texas State.
Hood had her own answer, though. After
Megan Kelnar singled to lead off the inning, Hood hit her home run. The two-run homer equalized the game headed into the 5
th inning.
Texas State found the go ahead run in the 5
th inning, scoring on a passed ball.
Harley Vestal scored the unearned run after reaching on a leadoff walk.
Azua closed out the game in statement fashion, with four strikeouts in the final two innings of the game to preserve the one-run lead.
After today's 5-4 win, Texas State is now 32-18 on the season and improve to 12-7 in Sun Belt play.
