Softball Wins Series Opener vs Marshall

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State softball got back into the win column with a 6-1 win over the top RPI in the conference, the Marshall Thundering Herd, on Friday night.

Texas State scored five early runs to silence the Thundering Herd, helped by a 10-strikeout night from Maddy Azua. That, along with Texas State's 12 hits from seven different batters helped Texas State to the win.

Karmyn Bass and Sydney Harvey each had three-hit outings, the pair also scoring two runs apiece.

How it Happened:
Maddy Azua started in the circle, tossing the complete game while allowing just one run on three hits and striking out 10 batters. She started off the night with a single, but bounced back with two strikeouts to keep the Thundering Herd off the board. Azua tossed four consecutive shutout innings to start the game.

Texas State got on the board early after a leadoff bunt single from Keely Williams, she advanced to third on Karmyn Bass' single. From there, the bases were loaded on Aiyana Coleman's 34th walk of the season.

Williams came around to score on Harley Vestal's hit down the left line. From there, Kat Zarate added a second run on a single up the middle of her own, scoring Bass. Kate Bubela batted in the final run of the first inning on a fielders choice, scoring Coleman.

The bats continued to be hot in the second inning when Texas State added two more runs. Harvey scored the first after reaching from an RBI single, she scored on a Bass double. Bass also came around to score on a Vestal double.

Azua retired the side in order in the second and third, then allowed a lone hit in the 4th.

The Thundering Herd scored their first run in the 5th, after a leadoff triple got a baserunner on. She'd score on a sac bunt.

Texas State added its final run in the bottom of the 6th, this time a Coleman single to score Harvey who had reached on a single of her own.

Azua tallied two more strikeouts in the 7th to put the Thundering Herd away.

After today's 6-1 win, Texas State is now 21-13 on the season and 4-3 in Sun Belt play.
