Azua With Second-Consecutive Shutout, Kelnar Walks Off ULM

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State softball got a 1-0 win in 10 innings against ULM to start out Sun Belt play this season. Maddy Azua tossed the complete game for the Bobcats, earning the shutout while allowing just five hits, walking two batters and striking out seven.

Megan Kelnar hit the walk off single down the left field line to win the game, scoring Harley Vestal who had reached on a fielder's choice.

How it Happened:
Azua started in the circle and tossed the complete game, allowing five hits and walking two batters.

Texas State had seven hits on the night, their first coming from Keely Williams in the leadoff. The Bobcats then loaded the bases with walks in the first inning but were unable to score any runs.

The two sides traded hits through the middle innings of the game, but between Ashanti McDade and Maddy Azua's performances, no runners were able to score. Between the two teams there was 17 runners left on throughout the game.

Texas State had a runner in scoring position in the 7th, thinking they'd found an answer but a strikeout from Kate Bubela ended the inning.

Azua retired the side in order in the 8th and 9th with her 5th strikeout of the night in the 9th.

In the 10th, Azua gave up a hit but struck out the two batters with a runner in scoring position to get out of the inning and preserve her shutout.

The Bobcats started the bottom of the 10th with a walk for Bass. From there, Harley Vestal reached on a fielder's choice. She advanced to second on a Kat Zarate single, and would go on to score on a batted ball from Megan Kelnar down the left field line. The RBI single from Kelnar was the lone of the game to end it in the 10th inning.

After today's game, Texas State is now 17-8 on the season and 1-0 in Sun Belt play.
