Azua Tosses Shutout for Win vs Sam Houston

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Maddy Azua tossed a complete game shutout with 11 strikeouts to tie her season-best in the Bobcats' 1-0 win versus Sam Houston. Azua's shutout performance was helped by a third-inning sacrifice fly for the lone run of the game off the bat of Harley Vestal

How it Happened:
Azua started in the circle and tossed the complete game, allowing five hits and walking one batter. She started off the game with a single but struck out the final two batters in seven pitches to get out of the inning with a runner in scoring position.

Texas State got two of its six hits in the first inning with singles from Karmyn Bass and Aiyana Coleman, but the pair were left stranded after a Vestal ground out.

Azua added two more strikeouts in the 2nd, and the Bobcats turned a double play in the third.

Texas State had two hits and its lone run of the game in the bottom of the third. Karmyn Bass put runners in scoring position with her double, then the bases were loaded on a Coleman walk. Ultimately, Kate Bubela scored on the sacrifice fly for the run.

Texas State turned a second double play in the fourth off a popup to Bubela. Azua also struck out batter in the fourth.

In the bottom half of the inning, Texas State got two runners and loaded the bases, put another pop up left the runners stranded and the score at 1-0.

Errors allowed runners to reach for both sides in the fifth, but neither scored any runs.

Both sides were able to get a runner on in the 6th as well but left them stranded.

Azua struck out the first and third batter she faced but surrounded by singles she had to work herself out of a tough spot. In the end it was a fly out to left to end the game and preserve the shutout and Texas State's 1-0 win.

After today's game, Texas State is now 16-8 on the season.
