MONROE, LA – Saniya Burks recorded her fifth 20+ point night of the season with 23 against ULM on Wednesday night. She scored 23 to lead the bobcats on 7-19 shooting, going 6-6 from the free throw line.
Â
She was one of three Bobcats in double-digits, alongside
Deja Jones (12) and
Kyra Anderson (11). Jones also led the team in assists with a season-best seven.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The two teams matched each other on shots in the first quarter, both shooting 7-19. It was the free throw line that made the difference for the Bobcats in quarter one, outscoring ULM 4-0 from the line. Despite the Warhawks recording three more rebounds than the Bobcats, Texas State was able to take a 19-14 lead after the first quarter. Burks and
Mia Galbraith combined for 10 of the team's 19 points.
Â
Quarter two was more of the same, with the Warhawks taking the advantage at the free throw line. Their two made free-throws helped them outscore the Bobcats 18-17, but Texas State still carried a three-point lead into the halftime break. ULM was rebounding better than the Bobcats, but Texas State's free-throw shooting and additional three pointer helped them stay ahead of the home side in the first half.
Â
Texas State pushed themselves out to a 14-point lead in the first half of the third quarter. That would be their largest lead of the game, at 4:03 in the third. Texas State led for 21 minutes of the game throughout, and nearly the entire third quarter was part of that. It was a late-quarter surge that allowed the Warhawks to tie the score at 54 with just under a minute to go. At the end of the third, the two teams were level at 56.
Â
ULM's momentum continued in the fourth quarter. The Warhawks pushed out to an 11-point lead that forced head coach
Zenarae Antoine to take a timeout. The Warhawks had a game-high 12-point lead at 2:49 left in the game, but that didn't deter the Bobcats. Texas State went on a run to score eight points in under a minute, led by five points from
Deja Jones, to make it a four-point game. The Warhawks responded, though, and held the Bobcats at bay. Despite the team looking to stage a fourth-quarter resurgence, ULM would win 83-74 in the end.
Â
After today's loss to ULM, Texas State is now 11-17 on the season and 7-10 in Sun Belt play.
