SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State softball extended its win streak out to three with a 3-1 win over Kansas City on Saturday morning.
The Bobcats bats were slow to start, but a 236 foot home run for Kat Zarate, her fourth of the year, put the Bobcats back in the game. That, a two-run 6
th inning and a 10-strikeout day between
Emma Strood and Maddy Azua helped Texas State get the win.
How it Happened:Â .
Emma Strood started in the circle for the Bobcats, retiring the side in order with two strikeouts in the first inning. She'd do it again in the second inning with two more strikeouts to keep the game scoreless.
Through the third and fourth, Strood continued to work efficiently in the circle. She had five strikeouts through four innings with just one single allowed.
Texas State got its first runner on in the third inning on a full-count walk for
Bailee Slack.
Strood loaded the bases in the top of the 5
th inning, when Maddy Azua came in to pitch. She'd allow a run on an RBI ground out for the Bobcats to go down a run.
In the bottom half of the inning, though, Zarate hit a ball 235 feet for her fourth home run of the year to tie the ball game up.
Azua struck out two batters in the 6
th to help carry some momentum for the Bobcats into the bottom half of the inning. The Bobcats put a runner on when
Keely Williams walked and would go on to steal second. Off a
Karmyn Bass double, she'd score Williams to put the Bobcats ahead for the first time in the game.
Aiyana Coleman added the insurance run with an RBI single to score Bass.
The Roos attempted a rally in the top of the 7
th when they placed runners on Bobcat errors, but Azua got two more strikeouts on the day to help escape the inning unscathed. In the end, Texas State held on to its 3-1 win.
After today's game, Texas State is now 8-5 on the season.
