SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State Softball split its opening day of the River State Classic with a loss to #19 Oklahoma State and a walk off win against Kansas City.
It was a ninth inning walk off effort for the Bobcats with a 2 RBI double for
Harley Vestal to win the game against Kansas City. The Bobcats showed well against Oklahoma State, but the Cowgirls pitching shut down the Bobcat offense.
How it Happened:Â
TXST 0, Oklahoma State 5
Maddy Azua started in the circle for the Bobcats, striking out two batters and retiring the Cowgirls without allowing a run in the first two innings. The Cowgirls scored their first run in the top of the 3
rd on an RBI single.
Sydney Harvey got the Bobcats lone hit of the game in the bottom of the third, but surrounded by strikeouts the Bobcats stranded her on base.
Both sides were retired in order in the fourth, but Oklahoma State answered with a run in the 5
th off another RBI single.
Azua gave up a third run in the 6
th, and head coach
Ricci Woodard opted to bring in
Abigail Jennings. Jennings would allow two more runs on a 2 RBI single.
Texas State was unable to find any offense in the final two innings and would suffer the 5-0 loss.
TXST 7, Kansas City 6 (9 inn)
Emma Strood started in the circle for the Bobcats and retired the side in order to start the game, with one strikeout.
From there, the Bobcat bats started out well, with a single from
Keely Williams in the leadoff. After a Vestal groundout,
Karmyn Bass was walked to put two runners on. For her third of the year, Coleman homered to right center for 3 RBI.Â
Sami Hood added to the scoring with a solo home run of her own, her first as a Bobcat.
The Kangaroos added three runs in the top of the 3
rd to make it a one run game and went on to tie the game at four in the top of the 4
th.Â
It took until the top of the 7
th for either side to add a run, but it was an RBI sac-fly from Katie Noble to give the lead to Kansas City. The Bobcats answered, though, with an RBI sac-fly from Vestal to force the game to extras.
Neither side added a run in the 8
th, forcing a 9
th inning to be played. Kansas City struck first, with an RBI single to left field. Vestal again answered the call, though, with an RBI double to walk it off. She scored
Keely Williams who was on from a hit by pitch, and Hood who was on from the international tie break rules.
Texas State won against the Roos by a 7-6 score in extra innings.
After today's two games, Texas State is now 6-5 on the season.
