Softball Splits Day, Ends with Run Rule Victory vs BYU

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State Softball rebounded after a slow start against Wichita State to get a run-rule win over BYU to split its day in the States Up Invitational.

After a 10-3 loss to Wichita State, despite a home run from Mayson Garrett, the bats came alive late against the BYU Cougars for a 10-2 win. Highlighting the game were home runs from Kat Zarate and Kate Bubela, and 2 RBI apiece from Keely Williams and Aiyana Coleman.

How it Happened:
TXST 3, Wichita State 10
Emma Strood started in the circle for the Bobcats, going through the order once. She tallied two strikeouts in the first and another in the second one time through the order. Analisa Soliz came into pitch at that point, though.

Soliz walked the first battle=er, and gave up an RBI single on the second. Another RBI single saw the Bobcats trailing 2-0. From there, a 3 RBI home extended the Shockers lead out to five.

Texas State was able to pull back two runs on a home run from Mayson Garrett. She scored Zarate who had reached base on a wild pitch.

The Shockers added four runs to their total, though, with a single and three-consecutive home runs. The three home runs came off Kaili Witherell who had come in to pitch after the Shockers' three-run homer.
The Shockers added their final run on an RBI single in the top of the 6th.

TXST 10, BYU 2 (6 inn.)
Maddy Azua started in the circle for the Bobcats, tossing the complete game with seven strikeouts and allowing just two runs.

BYU got on the board first in this game, though it took until the third inning. A double down the line would score the Cougars' batter who had got on base from a single up the middle.

It took Texas State to the fourth inning to answer, which came from a solo homerun from Kate Bubela for her second of the season.

Karmyn Bass added the second run for Texas State in the fifth off an RBI triple to score Bailee Slack. BYU answered that run with a homer up the middle of their own, though, to tie the game.

In the bottom of the 6th, though, the Bobcat offense exploded. They scored eight runs in the inning to walk the game off in a run rule. It started with a double from Mayson Garrett, then the Cougars intentionally walked Kate Bubela. From there, Emily Fish was hit by a pitch to load the bases. An RBI single from Vestal opened the scoring, following by an RBI single from Slack. Keely Williams added two more on a single of her own. From there, Coleman added two and Kat Zarate called game on a two-run home run to make it 10-2.

After today's two games, Texas State is now 5-3 on the season.
