Johnson Wins 100th Career Game

SAN MARCOS, Texas – A late three-pointer from Kaden Gumbs and two game-sealing free throws by Mark Drone clinched a 72-68 victory for the Texas State men's basketball team (12-11, 5-6 Sun Belt) over Marshall (13-8, 5-4 Sun Belt) on Wednesday in Strahan Arena. The victory was also the 100th of head coach Terrence Johnson's career leading the Bobcats.

Johnson is only the fourth coach to reach triple-digit wins in program history. He is the second fastest to 100 victories at Texas State with it taking him 179 games. The only coach to win 100 faster is Milton Jowers, who needed 157 contests.

Kyndall Davis set season bests with 15 points and four assists while making his season-high of nine rebounds. Drone scored a game-high 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting, went 2-for-4 on three-pointers and made 3-of-4 free throw attempts. The senior also grabbed four rebounds, dished out three assists and recorded two steals.

Both Jalen Bolden and Gumbs scored 10 points on the night that saw each of them go 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. Bolden retrieved five boards and had two assists while Gumbs finished with three assists.

The Bobcats outrebounded the Thundering Herd 41-31 and held a 14-6 advantage in second chance points. They also limited Marshall to five three-pointers, just under half of their season average.

After the visitors jumped out to an 8-4 lead, Texas State scored seven straight points to take the lead for good in the first half. The Bobcats would take a 10-point advantage five times in the period with the last coming with seven seconds left in the half when Drone made a driving layup.

Texas State would stretch its advantage to 14 after Davis made a fastbreak layup with 16:29 left in the game. The Herd would start to chip away at their deficit. They used a 14-4 run over five-plus minute stretch to tie the game at 61.

After Robert Fields made two free throws, Jalen Speer knocked down a three-pointer to put Marshall in front at the 6:10 mark. Neither team would score again until Erich Harding made a layup nearly three minutes later.

DJ Hall made a layup to end TXST's scoring drought but the Herd answered with a layup to go back up by three. That ended up being the visitor's final points of the night.

Fields made two free throws to make it a one-point contest with just over two minutes remaining. The next points of the game came from Gumbs with 21 seconds to play. The San Marcos native knocked down a three-pointer from the right corner that made Strahan Arena erupt as the Bobcats retook the lead.

An off-balanced three-pointer by Noah Otshudi bounced off the backboard and right into Drone's hands. He was subsequently fouled and sunk both free throws to seal the victory.

Next up for the Bobcats is a meeting with Old Dominion on Saturday in Strahan Arena with tip set for 1 p.m.
