Tennis Falls in Norman to Open Spring Season

NORMAN, Okla. — Texas State women's tennis opened the 2026 spring season Saturday with a season-opening doubleheader at the Headington Family Tennis Center, falling 4-0 to Wichita State in the morning before closing the day with a 7-0 loss to No. 6 Oklahoma.

The Bobcats competed in their first dual matches of the spring against two strong programs, facing Wichita State to begin the day before taking on one of the nation's top-ranked teams in Oklahoma later in the afternoon.

Wichita State secured the doubles point and followed with three singles victories to claim the season opener.

Doubles


Play opened with doubles action across all three courts. On court one, senior Ireland Simme and freshman Olivia Collins faced Wichita State's Giorgia Roselli and Xin Tong Wang in a tightly contested match. The Bobcat pair battled throughout but ultimately fell 6-4.

The deciding doubles result came on court three, where senior Emily Niers and freshman Zoe Du Pasquier Jensen took on Sati Aubakirova and Palmy Vimuktananda. Wichita State pulled away early and closed out the match 6-2, clinching the doubles point and giving the Shockers a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.

Singles


Wichita State maintained momentum once singles began. The first singles match to conclude came on court four, where freshman Stoney Cooks faced Palmy Vimuktananda. After dropping the opening set 6-2, Cooks continued to battle but fell 6-0 in the second.

Freshman Olivia Collins was next to finish on court five against Kris Kudryavtseva. Collins showed fight throughout the match, but Kudryavtseva claimed the straight-set win, 6-3, 6-2.

The match was decided on court two, where sophomore Tadiwa Mauchi squared off with Roselli. Mauchi battled but dropped both sets, 6-1, 6-1, as Wichita State secured the 4-0 victory.

The Bobcats returned to the courts in the afternoon to face sixth-ranked Oklahoma, which entered the day undefeated. The Sooners swept both doubles and singles to take the match.

Doubles

Oklahoma jumped out early in doubles play. On court two, sophomores Tadiwa Mauchi and Chantajah Mills opened the doubles slate for Texas State, facing Julia Garcia Ruiz and Salakthip Ounmuang. The Sooners controlled the match and closed out a 6-1 victory.


The second match to finish came on court three, where Emily Niers and Stoney Cooks competed against Laura Brunkel and Oyinlomo Quadre. Oklahoma again claimed a 6-1 decision to secure the doubles point.

Singles


Singles play began with senior Emily Niers competing on court three against Evialina Laskevich. Laskevich took the opening set 6-0 before Niers responded with a stronger second set, though the Sooner ultimately claimed the match 6-2.

Sophomore Tadiwa Mauchi followed on court two against Chloe Noel. After dropping the first set 6-2, Mauchi continued to battle but fell 6-1 in the second.

Freshman Olivia Collins competed on court five against Laura Brunkel. Collins stayed competitive throughout, but Brunkel secured a straight-set win, 6-4, 6-2.

On court four, freshman Stoney Cooks faced Quadre in one of the most competitive matches of the afternoon. Cooks pushed the opening set to a 7-5 finish before dropping the second 6-3.

The next singles match to conclude was on court six, where freshman Zoe Du Pasquier Jensen faced Gloriana Nahum. Du Pasquier Jensen pushed the second set to a tiebreaker, but Nahum secured the straight-sets win, 6-2, 7-6 (7).

The final and most competitive singles match of the day came on court three, as senior Ireland Simme battled No. 11 ITA newcomer Edda Mamedova. Mamedova edged Simme 6-3 in a tightly contested first set, but Simme responded by taking the second, 6-4. The two continued to trade points in a back-and-forth third set before Mamedova ultimately prevailed in a marathon tiebreaker, 11-9.

Texas State women's tennis returns to action Jan. 23, when the Bobcats host rival UTSA in their home opener at 1 p.m.
