Volleyball Sweeps TAMUCC in Southwest Showdown

EDINBURG, Texas — Texas State volleyball completed its first sweep of an opponent this season, with a 3-0 win over Texas A&M – Corpus Christi in Friday afternoons match.

Highlighting the match was a career-best 13 kills from middle blocker Jade Defraeye. She led the Bobcats in both kills and blocks tonight. That, and a standout performance from freshman outside hitter Britton Finley helped the Bobcats to sweep TAMUCC.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
In the first set, Texas State took a lead after the 2-2 point and didn't relinquish the lead for the rest of the set. Extending its lead out to as many as five at various points throughout the set, Texas State controlled momentum most of the way. The Bobcats 12 kills in set one came from five different arms, with Jade Defraeye and Bailey Hanner tallying three each. Texas State outworked TAMUCC defensively, digging 12 balls to their 7, which helped them win the set in the end. Texas State led won set one 25-18.

Set two was similarly controlled by the Bobcats, with Texas State taking a tied 3-3 scoreline and building themselves a 12-3 lead early. Despite the Islanders doing their best to battle back, Texas State was able to hold on to a 25-19 lead. Samantha Wunsch came alive in the second set for five of the team's 16 kills. Finley and Defraeye had four apiece as well.

The third set was more of a back-and-forth affair with nine tied scores and four lead changes. The match was tied as close to the end as 23-23, but Defraeye's 13th kill of the night gave the Bobcats match point, and Bailey Hanner got the final kill of the game to win it.

Texas State is now 3-1 on the season heading into the final game of the Southwest Showdown tomorrow.
