Soccer Comes from Behind to Down Panthers

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Trailing at halftime, Texas State scored twice in the second half to pick up a 2-1 win over Georgia State on Saturday night at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. The Bobcats extend their unbeaten streak in home conference matches to 13 matches to tie the program record.

With the victory, TXST improved to 6-2-3 overall and currently sit atop the Sun Belt Conference standings with 10 points behind a 3-0-1 record. The Panthers dropped to 6-5-1 on the season and 2-2-0 in league play.

Texas State outshot GSU 13-6 while limiting Aaliyah Faddoul, the nation's leader in shots per match and shot on goal per match, to just one attempt that was on target. Helen Alormenu paced the Bobcats with five shots and put two on target. Both Alexis Montgomery and Mady Soumare took two shots apiece.

Brooklyn Escobar made four saves on the night with three stops coming in the first half.

The first three shot attempts by the Bobcats from Sydney Bassa, Matsuri Tsutsui and Alormenu were all on goal. Ariana Anderson stopped all three attempts with the most dangerous being from Tsutsui, who sent a bending attempt to the far post.

On a counterattack, Faddoul drove down the right side and sent a low cross that was going back across the frame. Two TXST converged and knocked in the ball into the back of the net to give the visitors and 1-0 advantage early in the 15th minute.

The Bobcats knotted the score exactly 57 minutes into the contest. Soumare received a pass and one-touched it to her left to an open Victoria Meza. The junior midfielder sent a curving long ball to just inside the 18-yard box. Alormenu was there to receive the ball and sent a left-footed shot past the charging goalkeeper for her fourth goal of the season.

Late in the 87th minute, Kaylie Smith sent a cross from the left side of the pitch into the box. Alexis Montgomery headed the ball towards the goal but it bounced off the left post. Following the shot was Soumare, who hit it first time for her third goal of the year and put the Bobcats in front 2-1.

Next up for TXST is a road trip to take on Arkansas State on Thursday at 4 p.m.
