Baseball Drops Final Midweek Contest

EDINBURG, Texas – Texas State fell 11-9 on Tuesday night to UTRGV from UTRGV Baseball Stadium in the Bobcats' final midweek game of the season.

With the result, TXST is now 25-27 on the season while the Vaqueros are 34-16.

Claiming the win on the mound was Anthony Tejada (3-1) after tossing three scoreless innings of relief with five strikeouts. Chase Mora (0-1) took the loss after giving up two runs while striking out one batter in his collegiate pitching debut.

Working the most in relief was Colby Diaz, who tossed three innings with two strikeouts. Braylen Timmins worked a scoreless frame with a strikeout. Also punching out two batters was Matthew Tippie in 1.1 innings.

At the plate, Dawson Park went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Both Austin Munguia and Mora drove in three runs apiece. Also bringing home a run was Alan Shibley as he hit an inside the park home run.

Texas State jumped out to an early lead in the first when Munguia hit a two-run homer. The lead was short-lived as Easton Moomau hit a grand slam in the bottom of the frame to put the hosts up 4-2.

Over the next three innings, the Bobcats had opportunities to cut into and possibly take the lead but left a runner in scoring position each time. UTRGV added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run homer.

Shibley led off the next half inning by sending a 1-1 offering to right center that hit off the wall and bounced away from the outfielders. That allowed the senior to record an inside the park home run.

Mora would later be plunked and back-to-back walks to Rashawn Galloway and Munguia loaded the bases. Park sent a 2-2 pitch the other way for a two RBI single that cut the deficit to 6-5.

With the bases loaded in the sixth, Mora laced a 1-1 offering down the left field line for a bases clearing double to put TXST ahead. Munguia later hit a sacrifice fly to increase the advantage to 9-6.

The Vaqueros chipped away with a run apiece in the sixth and seventh innings. In the eighth, they tied the game on an RBI single from Armani Raygoza. An error on a grounder with two outs allowed UTRGV to score two more runs to take the lead for good.

Next up for the Bobcats is the final weekend Sun Belt Conference series of the regular season when James Madison comes to San Marcos. The first game of the series is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday.
