SAN MARCOS, Texas – For the fourth time in six games, Texas State scored double-digit runs but would fall 18-13 to UTSA on Tuesday at Bobcat Ballpark. It is the second highest scoring game ever between the two teams behind the 36 combined runs on the Apr. 2, 1995 contest that took place in San Marcos.
Â
With the result, TXST is now 21-24 on the season while the Roadrunners are 34-10.
Â
Christian Okerholm (2-0) picked up the win after throwing 3.1 innings out of the bullpen with three strikeouts and surrendering just one run. Braylon Owens claimed his second save of the season as he recorded the final four outs on the mound. Taking the loss was Jackson Mayo (1-3) after he gave up three runs in his relief outing.
Â
Matthew Tippie threw 3.1 scoreless innings and struck out three. Carson Laws recorded four strikeouts in 1.2 innings out of the pen.
Â
Going 2-for-3 with three RBI was Austin Munguia. The only other TXST player with multiple hits was Samson Pugh, who was 2-for-5 with a home run. Dawson Park plated three runs, all coming on a long ball, while Ian Collier and Zachary Gingrich also hit homers on the night.
Â
The Bobcats were the first to get on the scoreboard when Munguia grounded out but saw Farber cross the plate in the bottom of the first.
Â
UTSA went ahead in the top of the second with a three-run frame.
Â
That lead quickly vanished when Collier, Pugh and Gingrich went deep for back-to-back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the inning. Munguia drove in his second run in as many frames with a single back up the middle and Park capped off the scoring with a three-run round tripper to left field to put Texas State ahead 8-3.
Â
In the top of the third, the Roadrunners hit back-to-back homers to start it off. That was the beginning of a 10-run inning.
Â
More runs were tallied by the Bobcats in the bottom half of the inning. Coy DeFury, Chase Mora and Munguia all drove in a run apiece on singles. Another run was tallied on a wild pitch that cut the deficit to 13-12.
Â
Okerholm and Tippie stifled both offenses as neither team was able to score a run in the middle innings.
Â
UTSA would end up scoring three runs in the seventh and added two insurance runs in the ninth. The last run of the game for the Bobcats was on a Ryne Farber sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Â
Next up for TXST is a weekend series against ULM at Bobcat Ballpark. Friday's series opener is slated for a 6 p.m. start time.
