AUSTIN, Texas – For the fourth consecutive year, Texas State defeated Texas on the road at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Tuesday night saw the Bobcats use a four-run eighth inning on their way to a 5-3 win over the fifth-ranked team in the country.
Â
The four straight wins over the Longhorns in Austin ties the program record that was set from 2000-02. It also marks the first-time ever that TXST has defeated multiple SEC programs in a season.
Â
With the win, Texas State improves to 13-15 on the season while UT drops to 23-4 after seeing its six-game winning streak end.
Â
Throwing two innings of relief with four strikeouts was
Carson Laws (1-0), who picked up the victory.
Alex Valentin got the final three outs of the game to pick up his first save. Jason Flores (2-1) allowed four runs on three hits in 1.2 innings to take the loss.
Â
Shane Connel got his first start on the rubber where he tossed four innings and struck out four while giving up a run on three hits. Both
Braylen Timmins and
Matthew Tippie tossed scoreless frames out of the bullpen with Tippie striking out two and Timmins recording a strikeout.
Â
Only three hits were recorded by the Bobcats with all of them coming in the eighth inning.
Ian Collier hit a two-run home run,
Chase Mora had an RBI single and
Ryne Farber had a double. Also driving in a run was
Dawson Park while
Caden Baker scored a run.
Â
It would be the Bobcats who would get on the scoreboard first. Baker started the third off by drawing a walk and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. A sacrifice bunt by
Samson Pugh moved the freshman to within 90 feet of home plate. After a walk to Farber, Park lifted a pitch to centerfield that was caught but deep enough for Baker to tag and score.
Â
UT tied the game when Will Gasparino with a home run to left center in the fourth.
Â
The score stayed tied until the seventh when the Longhorns scored on a balk to go up 2-1. The hosts would load the bases later in the frame but Laws struck out Gasparino to limit the damage to just the one run.
Â
Facing a 1-2 count, Farber laced the next pitch to left center and was able to hustle to second for a double. Park sent the next pitch to centerfield that saw Gasparino unable to make the catch as the ball hit off the heel of his glove before he crashed into the wall. The ball bounced around and Park slid into third as Farber scored to tie the game.
Â
Mora sent a slow dribbler down the third baseline that his counterpart was unable to field cleanly for an infield single that put Texas State back in front. Collier capped off the scoring in the frame by sending a 1-1 pitch 454 feet to left field for his third homer of the season to make it a 5-2 advantage.
Â
Texas would score a run on a double in the ninth to make it a two-run contest. A single and walk loaded the bases with one out. Valentin induced a pop up down the right field line that was caught by Shibley and then Park snagged a liner off the bat of Kimble Schuessler for the final out of the night.
