SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State scored seven runs between the third and fourth innings on its ways to a 9-3 victory Tuesday night over Houston Christian at Bobcat Ballpark. The win was the Bobcats fifth midweek victory this season and first not against a Big XII or SEC opponent.
Â
With the victory, TXST improved to 18-18 on the season while the Huskies dropped to 22-13.
Â
Picking up his first career victory was Josh Glaser (1-0) after he struck out four in 2.2 scoreless innings of relief. Ben Smith (3-4) allowed three runs on three hits in three innings to take the loss.
Â
Austin Eaton started on the mound and went 3.1 innings with one strikeout while giving up two runs on three hits and two walks. Bryson Dudley tossed a scoreless inning and Braylen Timmins struck out the two batters he faced.
Â
Making his first collegiate appearance on the rubber was Dawson Park. The freshman punched out two in a scoreless ninth.
Â
Four times Samson Pugh came to the plate and reached base each time. He also scored three runs, drove in two runs and hit a double and triple. Ryne Farber went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a double.
Â
Coy DeFury drove in two runs, scored twice and hit his first home run in a Texas State uniform. Also scoring twice was Park while Austin Munguia stole a base.
Â
HCU controlled the first two and a half innings of the game. The visitors jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to three Bobcat errors.
Â
DeFury kicked started the offense by sending a 0-2 pitch over the right field wall to lead off the frame. Park followed with a single through the right side and Pugh was hit by a pitch. A 3-1 offering to Farber was smacked to right center for a two RBI double to put TXST in front.
Â
In the fourth, Munguia singled back up the middle and stole second. Back-to-back walks to DeFury and Park loaded the bases. Pugh blasted a 1-2 pitch to center field that landed at the base of the wall. Both DeFury and Munguia scored on the double while two throwing errors on the play allowed Park and Pugh to also cross the plate for a Little League home run that increased the lead to 7-2.
Â
A sacrifice fly by DeFury in the fifth increased the advantage to six runs.
Â
The Huskies got a run back in the eighth. But in the bottom of the frame, Pugh tripled to right center and scored on a single to left courtesy of Farber for the final run of the contest.
Â
The Bobcats hit the road this weekend to take on South Alabama. The first game of the series is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
