SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State women's tennis put on a dominant performance in its Sun Belt Conference opener, beating the No. 3 team in the conference – Georgia Southern – 4-0.
"Just a super solid performance from start to finish today, really proud of how we came out and competed," said head coach
Kendall Brooks. "Excited to get our first conference win, especially against a tough team that was ranked just last week. but not a lot of time to celebrate as we have to be ready to play again tomorrow."
The Bobcats' clean sweep of the Eagles began with earning the doubles point after winning matches on courts two and three. They continued their momentum in singles play, where they won three consecutive matches on courts five, four and one to clinch the match and earn their first win over Georgia Southern in program history.
Texas State earned its ninth consecutive win of the season, tying its longest winning streak set in 2012. The Bobcats also moved to 10-2 on the season, their best start since joining the SBC in 2014.
Doubles
Chantajah Mills and
Ireland Simme got the Bobcats started with a doubles win on court two. The pair won their match 6-3, earning their seventh win of the season as partners.
Kiana Graham and
Callie Creath clinched the doubles point for TXST with a win on court three. The pair won 6-2 and moved to 8-2 on the year in doubles play.
Sofia Fortuno and
Maria Lora were featured on court one, where their match went unfinished after TXST clinched the doubles point.
Singles
Ireland Simme, playing on court five, earned TXST its second point of the day and moved to 10-0 in singles play this season. Simme won her 10th consecutive match after defeating Georgia Southern's Amelie Rosadoro in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Emily Niers extended her singles winning streak to nine after defeating Mackenzie Leopold in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, giving the Bobcats a 3-0 lead.
The match-clinching point came from
Kiana Graham on court one. Graham earned her seventh consecutive victory, six of which were straight-set wins, after besting Lisen Rinman 6-3, 6-2.
The matches on courts two, three and six, featuring
Callie Creath,
Sofia Fortuno and
Maria Lora, all went unfinished after the Bobcats clinched the fourth point.
