SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State baseball team (6-3) dropped the series opener Friday night at Bobcat Ballpark to Grand Canyon (6-3) by a score of 4-0.

Earning the win on the rubber was Isaac Lyon (1-1) and Connor Mattison claimed his first save of the season. They combined for 18 strikeouts with 12 by Lyon and six courtesy of Mattison. Jackson Teer (0-2) allowed three runs on six hits and struck out five to take the loss.

Hayde Key (2.0 IP) and Cameron O'Banan (1.0 IP) both struck out two batters while Ryan Lawton and Jackson Mayo had one strikeout apiece.

At the dish, Cole Tabor went 2-for-3 with one walk. Also finishing with a base knock was Austin Eaton, Ryne Farber, Zachary Gingrich, Samson Pugh and Cameron Thompson.

The Lopes would tally three runs in the second with an assist to a Bobcat throwing error. GCU added another run in the sixth for the final run of the game.

Overall, Texas State left 10 runners on base with two being left in frames four times.

Game two of the series is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. first pitch on Saturday.
