Bobcat Defense Shows Out in 3-0 Win vs Coastal Carolina

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Texas State volleyball stacked up 14 blocks in a 3-0 win against Coastal Carolina where the Bobcats never trailed after the midway point in the opening set on their way to the sweep.

Highlighting the night was a nine-block night for Jade Defraeye. Defraeye paired with Bailey Hanner's six blocks to help lead the Bobcats. Additionally, Samantha Wunsch tallied 10 kills, nine digs with three blocks and three aces on the night for herself.

WHAT HEAD COACH SEAN HUIET SAID: "I'm really proud of this group. We knew Coastal is a good team. We wanted to come out and fire first. That's something we've been talking about. Trying to get on them early, I thought we did a really good job of that. As we settled in we showed in that first set what we're capable of and I'm really proud of this group."

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The match was back and forth in the early goings with 10 tied scores and three lead changes, but Texas State the lead once and for all after the media timeout when a block from Hanner and Maggie Walsh tied the game, then Walsh's kill gave the Bobcats the lead. From there, a 10-5 run for the Bobcats gave them a 25-20 win in the first set, let by Walsh's four kills.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 4-0 start in set two that set the momentum for the rest of the match. The Bobcats pushed out to a 8-2 lead to force an early time out from the Chanticleers. From there, the Bobcats slowly continued to distance the score and would go on to a 25-16 score to win the set. The Bobcats held Coastal to just a .059 attack percentage in the second set thanks to eight blocks from the Bobcats.

The third set was all Texas State as Coastal Carolina hit in the negative and tallied just three kills. Texas State hit .310 as a team with 13 kills. That, alongside three more blocks to the Chanticleers zero and 17 digs for the Bobcats helped them have a season-best set win of 25-9.

After today's three set win, Texas State is 13-11 on the season and 8-5 in Sun Belt play.
