SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State women's basketball started off the season with a 72-66 loss despite a 34-point effort from sophomore
Saniya Burks.

Burks led both sides in scoring on 13-18 shooting while going 7-10 from beyond the arc for her 34 points. She became the first Bobcat since Danasia Hood in 2023 to have a 30-point game.

Additionally, 11 Bobcats saw time tonight including the Bobcats two freshmen
Angela Carroll and
Kaliyah Murphy who made an impact off the bench.

WHAT HEAD COACH ZENARAE ANTOINE SAID: "This one is tough. It was a game of emotions. We were down, we fought our way back up, it was tied. It came down all the way to the wire. Texas State Bobcats fell short."

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Saniya Burks came off the bench for the Bobcats and started out hot with 3-3 shooting from beyond the arc to get nine of the Bobcats 16 first quarter points. She helped stage a comeback in the latter half of the first quarter after Texas State found themselves down 6-2 early, Burks three-pointers gave Texas State a 11-6 lead. From there, the two teams battled to a 16-16 tie after the first quarter.

The second quarter favored the visitors as they pushed out to a game-best 13-point lead with less than two minutes to go in the first half. Texas State was able to bring it within a nine-point spread with
Kyra Anderson and
Kaliyah Murphy buckets, but still trailed 38-29 at the halftime break.

Texas State controlled momentum in the third quarter though, outscoring Ohio 17-8. Burks led the way with 11 points in the second quarter on 5-6 shooting as she spent more time driving through the paint in the third. That, alongside limiting Ohio's Elli Garnet to just four points helped Texas State to tie the game back up at 46 after the third quarter.

The Ohio Bobcats were able to find momentum in the fourth, though, to distance themselves in the score through the end. Despite Texas State shooting 7-10, going 5-7 from three, Ohio's seven free throws to the Bobcats one was the difference maker. Ohio would go on to win 72-66.
