Soccer Falls in NCAA Tournament First Round to Baylor

WACO, Texas – The Texas State soccer team battled but came up short to Baylor on Friday night by a 3-0 score at Betty Lou Mays Field in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

With the result, the Bobcats concluded their season with a 10-4-7 record while the Bears improved to 13-4-4 and advanced to take on Wisconsin in the second round.

Baylor outshot TXST 17-11 and placed eight shots on frame to the Bobcats' three. Both Victoria Meza and Matsuri Tsutsui led the team with three shots on the night.

In goal, Brooklyn Escobar made five saves on the night.

During the first 34 minutes of the match, Texas State attempted four shots but saw two blocked and the other two go wide of frame. The Bears struck first in the 36th minute when Kai Hayes headed in a cross.

Midway through the 60th minute, the Bobcats were called for a foul just inside Baylor's offensive half. Olivia Hess would put a shot on target off the spot kick that was stopped by Escobar. However, the freshman was unable to control the ball and Hallie Augustyn pounced and blasted the ball into the back of the net to double the lead.

A cross into the box from Tsutsui saw Helen Alormenu run on and beat a defender to the ball two minutes later. However, the sophomore's header attempt sailed wide of the right post.

The final goal of the night came early in the 66th minute with Olivia Hess getting the score.

Jade Bowe hit a one-timer two-and-a-half minutes later that saw Azul Alvarez make a leaping save to keep the Bobcats off the scoreboard.
