SAN MARCOS, Texas – Big second halves from Mark Drone and DJ Hall helped Texas State (3-2) defeat Texas Southern (0-4) Saturday afternoon by a score of 77-67 from Strahan Arena.
Drone finished with a game-high 19 points, 10 of which came in the final 20 minutes. He knocked down 5-of-10 shots and converted 8-of-10 free throws while also recording three steals.
Hall totaled 16 points that also included a 10-point second half. The freshman made 8-of-12 shot attempts, grabbed seven rebounds, handed out two assists and posted two steals.
Also finishing in double-figures was Makai Willis with 12 points going 4-for-4 from both the field and charity stripe.
In his first game back from injury since the season opener, Kyndall Davis scored nine points behind two made three-pointers and grabbed seven boards. Tay Knox contributed seven points, five rebounds and rejected two shots.
As a team, the Bobcats made 53.3% (24-of-45) shot attempts and 75.0% (24-for-32) at the free throw line. They outrebounded the Tigers 35-28.
With the game tied at 6-6, TXST scored six straight points with the last four coming from Davis. TSU kept the contest within single digits until a 13-3 run by the Bobcats over a 3:24 minute span put them up 39-21.
The first seven points of the second half were scored by Texas State to go up 54-30 for the largest lead of the game. The Tigers would slowly chip away and get within seven points after two free throws from Troy Hupstead with 4:53 left on the clock.
Drone and Hall would score the last 11 points of the game for the Bobcats while the defense held the visitors without a field goal over the last 2:33 to close out the victory.
Next on tap for the Bobcats is a meeting with Abilene Christian on Tuesday at home for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
