SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State men's basketball team (2-2) never trailed Wednesday night in an 80-69 win over I-35 rival UTSA (1-2) at Strahan Arena.
Five Bobcats finished in double-figures led by Dimp Pernell's 19 points, 12 of which came in the second half, off the bench. He was 6-for-12 from the field and made 3-of-7 three-point attempts.
Recording his first career double-double was freshman DJ Hall with 11 points and 10 rebounds while also handing out four assists. Also finishing the night with 11 points was Franck Emmou, Kaden Gumbs and Makai Willis. Gumbs also dished out seven assists without committing a turnover.
Nearly finishing with a double-double as well was Robert Fields with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Both he and Tay Knox blocked two shots while Jalen Bolden recorded three steals.
Emmou opened the scoring with a three-pointer just over a minute into the game. It was the first of nine consecutive points for TXST.
The Roadrunners were able to cut the deficit to 11-6 but Pernell answered with a trey. Following a UTSA layup, the Bobcats would go on an 11-0 run over a 6:23 minute span. Gumbs made an acrobatic layup just before the buzzer to send the team into halftime leading 38-26.
UTSA didn't go away and used an 8-0 run to cut its deficit to 53-47. The visitors twice more got to within six with the last being with 4:17 left on the clock.
Texas State would limit the Roadrunners to just two baskets over the final four minutes. During that time, Pernell also knocked down a big three-pointer from the right corner and Fields was able to get a tip-in putback.
Next up for the Bobcats is a meeting at home against Texas Southern on Saturday at 4 p.m.
