Double Brace Night for Montgomery and Ngankem

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Both Alexis Montgomery and Jenny Ngankem recorded a brace Saturday night in Texas State's dominating 6-1 victory over Southern Miss at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. The victory also clinched the Bobcats' spot in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

The six goals are the most in a conference contest since also netting six against Marshall on Sept. 26, 2024. Saturday also marked the fourth time this season that TXST has scored at least five goals in a match to break the program record of three that was set in 2000 and matched in 2005.

With the win, Texas State is now 8-2-5 overall and sit alone atop the conference standings with 18 points behind a 5-0-3 record. The Golden Eagles fell to 2-12-1 on the year and 1-7-0 in the Sun Belt.

Along with Montgomery and Ngankem, also finding the back of the net once was Kennley Bradley and Mady Soumare.

Tying a new program match record was Matsuri Tsutsui, who recorded three assists. She matches the mark set by Andrea Mauk on Sept. 25, 2011 against Grambling and equalized by Lynsey Curry against Lamar on Sept. 20, 2015. Tsutsui now has seven assists on the season to tie for the fifth most in a campaign by a Bobcat.

In goal, Brooklyn Escobar made one save in 72 minutes of action. Maude Rouanet came on to play for the final 18 minutes and stopped three shots.

Montgomery opened the scoring midway through the 17th minute when she headed in a corner kick from Tsutsui at the right post. Just over 12 minutes later, Bradley doubled the lead when she headed in a ball put back into six-yard box by Chloe Jones.

The Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard with just under two and a half minutes left in the left half when Taylor Stewart sent a left-footed shot just under the crossbar.

Ngankem recorded her first goal of the night in the seconds into the 53rd minute. Tsutsui sent in a corner kick that the sophomore redirected with her head to increase the advantage to 3-1.

Early in the 63rd minute, Soumare flicked a long pass from Angela Gatto over to Kaylie Smith. The junior midfielder immediately sent the ball towards the 18-yard box for the Parisian to run onto it. She sent a low shot just inside the right post for her fifth goal of the season.

Tsutsui gathered the ball in the box and maneuvered around three defenders. She sent a short pass back to Montgomery, who touched it to get the ball on her right foot. The Round Rock, Texas native's shot was low and clanked off the left post and in to get her brace.

Capping off the scoring was Ngankem. The sophomore took a corner kick from the right side that saw the ball sail into the left side netting for an Olimpio with 70 seconds left on the clock.

Next up for the Bobcats is the final road match of the regular season when they travel to take on South Alabama on Friday for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
