JONESBORO, Arkansas — Despite three Bobcats recording double-doubles, Texas State volleyball dropped a five-set match to Arkansas State on Friday night.
Samantha Wunsch led the way for the Bobcats with 19 kills and 12 digs for her 7
th-consecutive double-double. She was one of three Bobcats to record a double-double, including
Maggie Walsh with 10 kills/10 digs, and
Dylan Gilkey with 27 assists and 15 digs.
Alyssa Clark also recorded a career-best 26 digs against the Red Wolves.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Texas State started the match down but found their way to rally back after a timeout midway through the set. The Bobcats tied the match up at 15, and played scrappy volleyball to fight their way through to the end. It was a timeout when the Bobcats were down 21-22 that helped them get the momentum to win the set. With a kill and a block from
Nina Moorer, Texas State won set one 25-23.
Texas State struggled to keep momentum in the second set, though. While Arkansas State hit .429 with a 10-1-29 attack line, Texas State hit just 10-6-31 for a .129 attack percentage. That, along with four serve errors for the Bobcats helped Arkansas State to a 25-12 set win in the second.
Set three was a battle between the two sides the whole way through, but ultimately Arkansas State was able to find a 25-23 win. Despite Texas State tallying 18 kills, six attack errors and two serve errors helped Arkansas State find the lead. Walsh had five kills in the third, while Wunsch had six to lead the Bobcats.
The Bobcats fought with all they had in set four, swinging .433 with 16 kills. Wunsch led the way again with four, but the 16 kills came from six different Bobcats. There was only one tied score and one lead changed through the fourth set, as Texas State recorded a 25-21 win in set four.
Texas State led early in the fifth set, going up 4-2 and forcing the Red Wolves into an early time out. From there, the two teams battled, and Arkansas State was able to tie the match at 9's. A 6-1 scoring run for the Red Wolves would win them the match, led by serves from Devyn Lewis. Ultimately, Texas State fell in the 5
th set to lose the match.
After today's five set loss, Texas State is 8-10Â on the season and 3-4Â in Sun Belt play.
