STATESBORO, Georgia – Texas State women's basketball suffered its first road loss of conference play to Georgia Southern on Saturday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Destiny Terrell helped the Bobcats to a good start with six points in the opening quarter as the team held a 18-17 lead after the first quarter. That, paired with three rebounds from
Taleiyah Gibbs helped the Bobcats start the road trip off with an effective first quarter. Despite the Eagles shooting 50% in the first quarter, the Bobcats forced seven turnovers in the first quarter to get chances to put themselves ahead.
The second quarter continued to be a back and forth affair between the two teams. Terrell continued to have an efficient first half with four points and six rebounds through the first eight minutes of the quarter. The Bobcats found themselves up 38-35 with 1:08 in the half when power issues at the Hill Convocation Center forced the game to come to a pause. After a delay,
Ja'Mia Harris hit a three to give the Bobcats a 41-35 lead at the break.
Georgia Southern got into a rhythm in the early goings of the third quarter which helped them reclaim the lead midway through the quarter. Texas State was able to end the period within four, though.
Blake Matthews had four in the third on 2-3 shooting to lead the Bobcats. Headed into the final 10 minutes of play, Texas State trailed 53-49.
The Bobcats were outscored 16-13 in the fourth quarter. A four-minute scoring drought helped the Eagles get to a lead early in the quarter. Despite a late surge from the Bobcats, Texas State fell 69-62 in Statesboro.
Texas State is now 8-8 on the season and 2-4 in Sun Belt play.
