Lugo Smacks Three Doubles in Lake Charles

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Junior Aaron Lugo hit three doubles on the night but it would be McNeese coming away with a 7-6 win in 10 innings over Texas State at Joe Miller Ballpark on Tuesday. It is the most doubles in a game by a Bobcat since Cody Lovejoy hit three against CSU Bakersfield on Apr. 26, 2013.

With the result, TXST is now 26-27 overall while the Cowboys improved to 28-23.

Lugo finished the night 3-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI and was intentionally walked twice. Tyler Garritano went 2-for-4 and recorded his first collegiate RBI of the night.

From the leadoff spot, Samson Pugh hit his second home run of the season, scored twice and was walked three times. Also finishing with a base knock was Ian Collier while Alex Gonzales and Davis Powell drew two free passes apiece.

On the rubber, Nicholas Holbrook (0-1) took the loss after hitting and walking the first two batters in the extra frame that would eventually score the tying and winning runs. Max Swenson (3-0) picked up the victory as eh struck out three in his lone inning of work.

Taylor Seay threw 2.2 scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts and Otto Wofford stuck out one in two innings of shutout ball. Calen Graham started and went 2.1 innings with two strikeouts while giving up two runs on four hits. Retiring two batters in relief were Cameron O'Banan and Jack Stroud.

The Cowboys jumped out to an early lead with a solo homer off the bat of Cooper Hext in the first inning.

Lugo led off the second with a double to right center. After he advanced to third on a wild pitch, Alex Gonzales drew a free pass to put runners on the corners. Garritano followed with an RBI single through the right side to tie the game.

A 1-0 pitch to Pugh was sent 378 feet over the left field wall for his second homer of the season and put TXST in front in the third. Lugo doubled the lead with a double down the third baseline that plated Chase Mora.

McNeese got another solo home run, this time from Simon Larranaga, that pulled the hosts to within one in the third.

The fifth began with Lugo hitting his third double of the game. He would move to third on a groundout to the second baseman and scored via a wild pitch to increase the lead to 4-2.

In the bottom of the frame, the Cowboys tallied three runs to retake the lead behind three walks, two fielder's choice plays and one hit by pitch.

Following back-to-back walks to Pugh and Powell, respectively, Chase Mora reached via a fielder's choice as Powell beat the throw to second to load the bases. Lugo smacked a deep fly to right and that allowed Pugh to tag and score to tie the game at 5-5.

The 10th began with Powell striking out but reaching first on a wild pitch. He would advance into scoring position on another wild pitch and reached third on a groundout. The senior shortstop put the Bobcats back in the lead when he crossed home plate on the third wild pitch of the inning.

In the bottom of the inning, the first two batters reached for the Cowboys via a hit by pitch and a walk. O'Banan was called on out of the bullpen and recorded a strikeout and then a groundout that moved both runners into scoring position. He had a 2-2 count on Chase Keaton, but he was able to hit a line shot down the right field line for the walk-off double.
